Remember Your Freedom! Part 1 - Don't Tread on Me!

This is the first in a series of posts about US History and Patriotism. It is nothing short of a coincidence that now, the week leading up to my nations birth, that I have rediscovered my love for all things America. Its great timing. The series of posts is focused on simply reminding people of the history of their nation and trying to give a sense of modern-day relevance to it.

The Gardsden Flag bears the famous and timeless motto of "Don't Tread On Me", a Diamond-back Rattlesnake coiled and ready to strike at all those who would dare to mess with it!

To me, this was the first, and best, symbol of the American ideal best put forth by, of all things, Rage Against the Machine: "F*#K YOU, I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!"

The flag and imagery was inspired by a political cartoon that appeared in a 1751 copy of the Pennsylvania Gazette drawn by Benjamin Franklin called "Join Or Die", a stark message to all 13 Colonies that in order to defeat the British, petty differences had to be set aside and united these Colonies could win. It was designed by Christopher Gadsden, the flags namesake, in 1775, and was even one of the official flags of America at he country's birth.

In a more modern context, it could be seen as a way to support those around the world today.

I was at a protest against the actions of the Iranian government towards their people not too long ago and, to me, its easy on some levels to see a lot of similarities to their struggle for freedom against a tyrannical "democracy" and how they are suppressed to those of our ancestors, who fought and died in order to achieve their ideals. I decided there was no better way to show support than to fly this flag.

The coiled snake, ready to strike... to me, it was a perfect symbol of the people in Iran, ready to strike back and fight back against a corrupt election and leader.

To me, its a little disheartening to see my fellow American's seem to take their freedom for granted when you have people halfway across the world simply struggling, even dying, for the same type of freedom and liberty we have. Its even more disheartening to see people OK their government taking them away... but that's another day, and another post.

No Skateboarding? OK... I Think I Can Fix That

If You Can Read This, You're Smarter than 52% of the Adults in Philadelphia!

To paraphrase what someone else once said, “If you're not angry about the state of Philadelphia, you're not paying attention!”

Today, Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board stated that more than 202,000 adults in Philadelphia are don't have a high school diploma, and 550,000 adults LACK BASIC LITERACY SKILLS! Can you believe that?! That's an insane amount of people! Basically, 52.2% of the adults in this city... are stupid. Literally. Over half the people in this city have no basic grasp of language! Over half the people in this city have no idea how to vote, go online, can read a book or newspaper... 52.2%!

What the hell?!

Its nothing short of astounding! I can honestly say, without fear, that as I write this, over half the people of the city in which I ran for mayor are stupid! I can say that because if you can't read and you're out of school, there is something fundamentally wrong!

I used to spend days upon days wondering how and why people didn't seem to understand the issues they were faced with, why they seemed so ignorant when I worked in retail, and why so many people don't seem to have the basic skills needed to function in life in this city!

So what do we do?

That's where it gets tricky. We have one major plus about the young people: They tend to use text messaging and Twitter, and to use them... you need to know how to read! No if's, and's, or but's, you need to read!

When it comes to adults, its a lot more tricky. Some of these people have made it even 50 years without having to learn how to read, so the real target should be 20 to 50-year-olds. These people are the lifeblood of our city, the ones who are able to work. How do we educate them? How do we get them to learn how to read?

I don't know, but I do know that if there is now choice but for them to learn, they will.

Thanks to Philebrity for the tip!

Want to Go to a Concert on the 4th of July, But HATE The Roots and Sheryl Crow?

So, all the local blogs are in a tizzy about The Roots playing the Ben Franklin Parkway as the opening act for Sheryl Crow. If you're anything like me, you're as interested in that as going to see your dying aunt when you were 10 years old that you never liked an always pinched your cheeks.

Thankfully, you're an adult now and you can do what you want!

Well, lucky for you, R5 Productions and DFP Promotions have both taken it upon themselves to throw a big middle finger to the idiots who organize the Sunoco "Welcome America" event and said, "Hey, you know what? We have local acts and national acts that actually are INTERESTING! Maybe they'd like to play in the Cradle of Liberty this weekend?"

The Casualties will be playing with Leftover Crack on July 4th at 2PM!

Yep, now you don't have an excuse NOT to go, save being broke! Plenty of time to go to an awesome show and bash a few skulls, then head down to the Parkway to check out the fireworks... some of which you may set off yourself!

Oh, it gets better! You also have the Hostile City Death Fest at The Arena. Why care about a bunch of Deaht Metal bands you've never heard of? Because DEICIDE will be there! DEICIDE! The masters of death metal! The band Tom Ridge (supposedly!) banned from playing Pennsylvania! The band fronted by madman Glenn Benton! Then you have A.C., a band so terribly un-PC its nothing short of amazing! Then you have local acts who made it big, Total F**cking Destruction and Rumplestiltskin Grinder!

So, you have 2, count 'em, TWO great shows to go to instead of sitting around the house and eating crappy hamburgers like you always do! So get off your butt, run down to the nearest ticket outlet, AND BBUY THESE TICKETS! NOW!!!

One Of My First Albums: "Rock of the 80's, Volume 15"

I thought this would be an interesting thing to do. This year marks the 10th year of me buying albums on my own, although 1998 was when (in a sense) I started. So this is sort of an unofficial way of me going through stuff I got when I started getting into music... and what actually stuck.

When I was younger, my mom and I would head south to Willamsburg, VA, or on one occasion for my graduation, Walt Disney World by car. Yes, you read that right; my mother drove from Philly to Walt Disney World. It was awesome! It took 3 days to get down there, and I wound up getting my own hotel room because the hotel screwed up everything. Hey, 13, your own hotel room at a resort? Just nothing short of amazing! But, really, that's another story for another. Well, one more thing: We came back during the massive wildfires they had back in 1998. It took 2 days to get out the state (I forget why), and after spending a second night in a roach-infested motel, my mom said, "THAT'S IT!"

She literally drove from Florida to Philly IN ONE DAY! Ha hah ha, you should have seen it! Rarely any rest stops, and my mom had a heart condition! In fact, when we got home, the credit card company called her because she used the same card to buy gas in South Carolina and Philly, and she went so fast, they thought her card was stolen! Ha ha ha ha!!

Ah...

Well, I did tell you all that to, some degree, a point. I got the cassette that year in 1998, the year I graduated 8th grade and, with it, grade school (My school was K - 8). Being 13, it was weird; too young to remember the 80's easily, too old to not. So we were at what was new to me then, something called "Wal-Mart". I had never seen one, and in a bin was all these cassettes. Well, I had just gotten all this cash for graduation and among other music I would later buy, I got a copy of something that just LOOKED cool: "Rock of the 80's, Volume 15."

I can't say if any song stuck out, or artist. Maybe Culture Club. Maybe it was the brigh colors. It didn't matter to me, though, it was only $2 and I was rich! So I bought a copy.

I remember bugging my mom to put it into the cassette deck of our new Buick Century Custom. She didn't like it, but I had my own personal cassette Walkman to enjoy it on. I can't tell you how awesome it is to look back at that trip, sitting in the back seat with my mom and grandma in the front, surrounded by comic books, junk food, Lego sets, my sketch book, and some awesome toy I got at Taco Bell for the then-new Jurassic Park movie. Looking at the highway while "In A Big Country" by Big County plays, going to new lands you've only heard of...

So I've had a hankering to listen to this cassette for a long time now and today I put it into my cassette player for the first time in what may be 7 years. It still plays perfectly! I can't tell you how obsessed I was with Dixie Midnight Runner's "Come On, Eileen", a perfect pop song since it got caught in my head so easily both then and now! T'Pau "Heart and Soul" is still as beautiful as ever. Although it is safe to say that I don't like Culture Club or The Knakk. The Fixx "Secret Separation" is awesome, and "When the Heart Rules the Mind" by GTR is just beautiful.

I'm glad to hear GTR, though; it really is awesome hearing some great guitar work. I did some research... never knew they were a supergroup formed by Yes and Genesis. Nice.

To this day, "Coming Up Close" (or as I call it, Welcome Home) by 'Til Tuesday still brings a tear to my eye. It's a really beautiful song. I don't know if you ever got the chance to hear it if you are a child of the 80's or not, but I recommend it. Its soft and delicate, and really interesting.

To me, this tape is exactly what is missing from most pop music these days. Namely, something interesting and fun. Then again, we do have that, don't we? I can see it now: In a few years, people will fawn about how awesome this group or another from MySpace was awesome, like "Cobra Starship" or "Lady Gaga", groups I've never heard of but might need to give a try. Needless to say, nostalgia can cloud judgment and reality...

But this album was always a nostalgia album for me, even when I first bought it at the age of 13. It may seem odd, but I was discovering the 80's for the first time in 1998. It was a wonderful time for me, and its showed one of two things: I'm either really late to trends or really early for the comeback.

The closing song on this album is "19" by Paul Hardcastle. The song is awesome, and it came out they year I as born, 1985. Looking back, its safe to say that this song made it possible to become a fan of KMFDM. Its a fairly straight-forward track, but the way its done is awesome, adding elements of what I would consider metal, or at least industrial, into a pop-laden song that talks about, of all things, the horror of Vietnam. Its an awesome song, I love it... find it!

If you want, check it out:
  1. Come on Eileen - Dexys Midnight Runners
  2. Heart and Soul - T'Pau
  3. I'll Tumble 4 Ya - Culture Club
  4. Good Girls Don't - The Knack
  5. Secret Separation - The Fixx
  6. In a Big Country - Big Country
  7. When the Heart Rules the Mind - GTR
  8. Coming up Close - 'Til Tuesday
  9. 19 - Paul Hardcastle
If you can, pick it up. If not... well, you have my review and the track listing. Enjoy!

The King is Dead

Its nothing short of shocking on every level imaginable.

I know that, as I write this, everyone and everybody is writing about the death of Michael Jackson. They're either keeping it short and simple, telling you about the death, or telling you odd stories about their memories that, in the end, you don't really care about. Then you have the odd story that you either stumble upon or someone sent you, or the one you did during a random search of the net.

I don't know, frankly, what to say. It feels shocking, really, that he died. He was Michael Jackson, the boy from Neverland who never wanted to grow up. He was Michael Jackson, infamous for his actions and praised for his creative genius. He was Michael Jackson, THE King of Pop.

I have no idea what teenagers are thinking right now. I remember in 1997 when Princess Diana died and the nearly insane amount of coverage of it drove me up a wall at the age of 12. I didn't know who this person was, and I really never cared, and I was sick of the coverage after 2 days. I think teenagers have an idea who he was... if not... well, I feel old at the age of 24.

Oddly enough, the man who hates everything, the man who has listened to Megadeth and Slayer and NOFX and Discharge, the man who has shredded on his guitar with reckless abandon and has simply enjoyed insulting the pop-icons of his age, from Britney Spears to Christina Aguilara to the insipid crap that is hailed today.... I was a Michael Jackson fan.

The year was 1995... or at least, I think it was. His album, "HIStory: Past, History, and Future, Book 1", was coming out. VH1 and MTV were playing his videos almost non-stop and it did, in a way, brainwash me. But he was awesome. By 1997, I was basically done with him and I sold the only CD I had.

Now he's dead...

It feels weird, but losing someone really does force you to remember the good times.

If it wasn't for this man, we wouldn't have gotten 90% of the decent pop music we got since then. He redefined pop music, he was big, and frankly, after the death of Elvis, he WAS Elvis! A man larger than life, a man who was bigger than the myth that surrounded him, and a man who redefined the world with a voice and talent that will never be seen again.

It's odd looking back at his life and thinking about how much I got from him. From the moves on my skateboard, to the faces I like to make... and to a degree, the sense of melody and rhythm in even my most insane of guitar playing (although Devin Townsend highly influenced that, too!)... I owe a great debt to the man in many ways that I can't imagine.

To that end, I want to say the most metal pop-song ever has to be "Smooth Criminal".

And Billie Jean? The song reached across genres and styles and, hands down... the most bad-ass Michael Jackson song ever. Hey, it doesn't have to be heavy, but lyrically and in terms of delivery, it is just bad-ass!

He was a genius, and I will miss him.

Silent Protest Against Election Fraud in Iran & Candle Light Vigil

On Sunday when I held my protest, a man I'll refer to simply as R.Manika spoke to me and had some really interesting things to say about the situation in Iran. He also mentioned he wanted to paln a rally for Thursday. If you can make it, I highly recommend going.

Silent Protest Against Election Fraud in Iran & Candle Light Vigil

Iranians around the world voted in the presidential election of 12 June 2009 (22 Khordad 1388) and stand in solidarity with the people in Iran and their true vote. We in the Iranian Diaspora reject the 'official' results put forth by the Ministry of Interior and demand that this election be canceled and held again. We echo demands that the Iranian government take clear and transparent measures toward insuring that the democratic process is respected, and cease all violence against the people. Moreover, we demand that the government respects all the rights of the people enshrined in the Iranian Constitution, including: Freedom of Assembly (Article 27), Freedom of the Press (Article 24) and Freedom from Arbitrary Arrest and Detention (Article 32).

Please come to show your support for the citizens of Iran, who have risked their lives to protest the 'official' results of the election. Our silent protest is followed by a candle light vigil to honor the courage of those who lost their lives, to ensure that their voice is not dead, that their memory is with us forever.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD and invite your friends, families and everyone…

Don't forget to wear GREEN.

Date: Thursday, June 25, 2009

Time: 6:00-8:00pm
Silent protest: 6:00-7:15pm
Candle light vigil: 7:15-8:00pm

Location: Rittenhouse square (North Side)
Between 18th and 19th on Walnut Street
Philadelphia, PA 19103

The point is to support the people of Iran in their demands around this fraudulent election and to condemn the violence. Not to push other agendas. No political factions, NO FLAGS (from any country), let us speak with one voice.

Sitting on the Sidewalk is Against the LAW!: Why Skateboarders Rights Also Effect You

As you may have seen in the comments section of my post, "NO Skateboarding Day 2009", it was pointed out that, to a degree... the officer was right. Damn.

Its incredible confusing to explain, so I'll state this as easily as possible.

For starters, there is a section of the law called §10-611. Sidewalk Behavior.

The question I'm posing, and many will, is does this supersede the law stated in 10-610, which basically contradicts this in terms of rights for skateboarders?

But I'm getting ahead of myself. If you clicked that link, you head, more likely than not, is now spinning and it hurts like hell. If you start reading it, you realize that this law prohibits... well, pretty much everything.

Here's what applies to everyone:
(a) The following provisions shall apply city-wide: Subsections (2)(a), relating to parking a motorized vehicle on the sidewalk; (2)(b), relating to gambling on the sidewalk; (2)(f), relating to unlicensed sale of goods or services on the sidewalk; (2)(i), relating to the sale of goods or services, or solicitation of funds, on the highway; (2)(j), relating to displaying for sale objectionable material; (2)(l), relating to unreasonable obstructions on the sidewalk; (5)(a), relating to honor boxes on the sidewalk without a permit; (5)(b), relating to littering on the sidewalk; (5)(c), relating to excessive noise on the sidewalk; (6)(a), relating to owner/occupier of private property keeping the sidewalk clear of litter and obstructions; and (6)(b), relating to owner/occupier of private property keeping the sidewalk in good repair.
Or, in short, you can't do the following on the sidewalk: Park your car, gamble, sell things without a permit, panhandle on the highway, display objectionable material, create an "unreasonable obstruction", you need a permit for an honor box, litter, make excessive noise, and if you own property, keep the sidewalk in good shape.

Make sense? Good!

OK, here is behavior that is prohibited in certain areas:
(b) The following provisions shall apply only in the zones designated by Council: (2)(c), relating to riding a bicycle on the sidewalk; (2)(d), relating to riding a scooter, roller skates or skateboard on the sidewalk; (2)(e), relating to loading or unloading a commercial vehicle on the sidewalk; (2)(g), relating to lying on the sidewalk; (2)(h), relating to sitting on the sidewalk; (2)(k), relating to unlicensed placement of any bench, planter, fixture or street furniture on the sidewalk; (2)(m), relating to unattended belongings on the sidewalk; (2)(n), relating to unrestrained animals on the sidewalk; (4)(a), (b) and (c), relating to aggressive solicitation; and (6)(c), relating to owner of take-out restaurants care of trash receptacles on the sidewalk.[98]
Confused? Me to. It says that the following applies to riding your bike, scooter, skateboard, or roller skates on the sidewalk, commercial vehicles, unlicensed fixtures on the sidewalk, animals, and solicitation. Oh, and sitting and lying on the sidewalk. It also deals with aggressive panhandlers.

Now, the next part of the law deals with the locations. It is the single most confusing thing for a lay-person to try and understand. It takes a while, but if you dissect it, it makes sense. I'm not going to go through the entire thing right now since the purpose of this is to deal with it in relation to Center City. The reason I'm doing that is because it effects the most people.

So, in terms of Center City, the following areas are covered:

  • The area bounded by the north side of Vine street on the north, the west side of Broad street on the east, the south side of Lombard street on the south, and the Schuylkill River on the west.

  • Broad street, from the south side of City Hall-South to the Philadelphia Naval Business Center.

  • South street, from the west side of Broad street to the Schuylkill River.

  • The First Councilmanic District.

Now, the last part is where it also gets confusing. The First Council District covers... well, everything east of Broad Street, from Spring Garden all the way down to Oregon Avenue. Amazing. Amazing dumb.

Even more so? Here's three maps. The first is based on the initial wording.

OK, west of City Hall. That stinks, but OK, there's still the east side....

Oh, wait. When we pull out, we see that the 1st Council District makes even the East Side illegal. And not just in Center City. No. Its worse than that!

Yep. From (and I'm being nice here!) Vine Street down to South Philly, all the way to the SHORE, according to this inane, confusing, idiotic law, YOU CAN NOT DO ANYTHING ON THE SIDEWALK!

Let me guess, your chuckling to yourself right now. "Well, I guess those skateboarders and cyclists are going to have to realize now that their little 'hero' here just helped everyone else get them busted!" Well, guess what? This law basically applies to more things than you can imagine! For starters, do you ever sit on the sidewalk? You know, you get tired, no where to sit, you're tired... you sit on the sidewalk. Well, you're breaking the law!

Homeless people who bug you for change? Illegal! Ever walk in a group of people and block the sidewalk? Illegal! If they enforced that one, I think the tourists would get mad! "What do you mean our group of 20 people are getting tickets for obstructing the sidewalk?! We're trying to look at the Liberty Bell!"

Or how about people on Market Street who like to make as much noise as possible to raise money for their marching band? Or the 12 Tribes of Israel group that like to use a loud speaker to spread their hate? Illegal acts all!

So, to clarify, you can't do the following in most of the city:
  • (2) Obstructing the Sidewalk Prohibited. No person shall:

  • (a) Park any motorized vehicle on the public sidewalk.

  • (b) Conduct any gambling or other games of chance on the public sidewalk.

  • (c) Ride a bicycle upon any public sidewalk.

  • (d) Ride a scooter, roller skates or skateboard on any public sidewalk.

  • (e) Obstruct the public sidewalk while loading or unloading a commercial or other vehicle, except as shall be necessary for the safe and expeditious loading or unloading of such vehicle.

  • (f) Sell or offer for sale any goods, wares or services on the public sidewalk, without a license from the Department of Licenses and Inspections pursuant to Chapter 9-200.

  • (g) Lie on the public sidewalk, or on any object placed on the public sidewalk.

  • (h) Sit on the public sidewalk, or on any object placed on the public sidewalk, for more than one hour in any two hour time period.

  • (i) Sell or offer for sale any goods, wares or services, or solicit funds for any purpose, in or on the public highway, except for licensed vendors
In terms of skateboarders, its even crazier! The law literally forbids riding your skateboard to the ONLY skate park in Philadelphia, FDR Park! It states you can't skateboard on Broad Street towards the Philadelphia Naval Business Center, which is on the coast, and past the skate park!

Did anyone use their brain when they came up with this?! Was FDR Park not THERE when they created this? Why didn't they modify it up to there?! On top of all that, isn't it safe to say that this also makes having a legal skateboarding business in the heart of the most busy area of Philadelphia next to impossible?! Nocturnal and Bainbridge Skate Shop are the last two skateboard shops standing down there, with Subzero forced out and forced to move north.

Skateboarders have a distinct disadvantage to these inane laws that others who wish to enjoy the "prohibited activities" don't; and otherwise legal right. Center City has the best sidewalks, the nicest areas, and is one of the safest plays to skateboard in Philadelphia. Skateboarders are, to this extent, allowed to skateboard on the street.... which is as dangerous as you can imagine. Have you ever tried skateboarding down Market Street at 3PM? Or even at 8PM? It isn't easy!

City Paper did an article recently about cyclists in Philadelphia, and just how much cycling is a benefit to the city. Skateboarding, for me, is the same. I can't do tricks. I wish I could... I can't. I've been doing this for 12 years, I've been riding on Market Street with ease since 2002 with only 2 actual problems of me running into someone (by accident, completely forgiven, everyone was fine). Its great to get around with, and until Sunday, I've never had a problem and police officers have always been nice to me and let me by. Why? Because I'm kind, courteous, and I watch out for what I'm doing! And most skateboarders are the same way as well.

At the same time, cyclists, for example, are also participating in a legal activity as well that tends to be more dangerous than skateboarding for both themselves and others. They have to stay alert, attentive, and courteous. To their advantage, they can attain and maintain a decent speed that skateboarders can not. Cyclists are given a respect that skateboarders only dream of, and while the same laws apply to them as they do to skateboarders, Philadelphia is more welcoming and, more than anything, TOLERANT of their illegal behavior. My story yesterday is testament to that.

So this law effects more than simply skateboarders; it effects all of us who wish to do otherwise legal activities.

But, as I said at the start, does this circumvent §10-610. Skateboarding, Rollerblading and Bicycling on Public Property? The law is specifically geared towards skateboarders and was passed in 2000. If "Public Property" doesn't apply to, of all things, sidewalks, does that then mean that this law is, in the end, moot? Does this make skateboarding, in essence, illegal in 70% of Philadelphia?!

Like I said, this is incredibly confusing and makes little, if any, sense! So are you still laughing at the skateboarders and claiming it doesn't effect you?

Coming soon, I'll explore what alternatives this leaves for teenagers who want to enjoy this legal and healthy activity, the effects on society, and what it means to your tax dollars. Trust me, you will care.

EDIT: Haveboard pointed out a correction: Bainbridge Skateshop is on the same location that Skatenerd's Minnow was. Bainbridge Skateshop is Elite's new name. Exit and Nocturnal are the two other shops in Philly.

BLACK METAL COOKIES!!!!

It's been a pretty bleak few days (5 murders on Fathers Day, the actions in Iran, the illegal crackdown on legal skateboarding), so I think its safe to say we all need something to kinda make us laugh right now.

To that end, I give you two teenagers making cookies to Immortal's classic song, "Sons of Northern Darkness"! Personally, I've always loved this song, and this video IS KULT! TRUE NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Iran Vigil in Philadelphia

Tonight, a vigil was held in Philadelphia for those who died opposing their government in Iran.

It was, to me, one of the most humbling moments of my life.

Normally, I like being the center of attention. This time, I stood back and watched... and it was nothing short of beautiful. I had gone to a protest at Rittenhouse Square on Saturday and no one was there. No one. It was disappointing and I went home. Later, I saw someone post on Twitter that they wanted to get a protest together for that night. I helped and we held on at LOVE Park at 9PM. I stood there with a "Don't Tread on Me" flag and a sign that read "Free Iran!" We talked and decided to try something different since it was just us.

A vigil for those who died.

When I got home, I quickly made a blog post and put it on Twitter. I didn't know what would happen. I checked the stats and it got about 200 hits by 7PM, 2 hours before it started. That's amazing since most days I only get 20 to 50. A lot of people were going to it from my Twitter post and a lot of people were e-mailing it to each other.

I got to 5th and Market at 8PM. No one was there.

I stood there with my "Free Iran!" sign, and I tried to light my candle in the wind. I was quickly joined by others, mostly Iranian-Americans, and we all lit candles. Someone from Philadelphia Weekly came by to report on it. A child held my sign.

The group was small, just twelve people... but it was touching and moving in a very big, very real way. When a woman took out a large amount of candles and spelled out "Iran", I almost cried.

I'm not Iranian. I have no connections to whats going on there on a personal level. Me? I'm just someone who is seeing what he is and felt compelled to do something, anything, to show support for those who are dying now for this thing I love, this thing I care so much about. They fight for democracy, they fight for their rights... and it is, to me, the most beautiful thing I've seen.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for coming out to the event, and to those who didn't... please hold an event. Just go ahead and organize it. All I did was make a post on my blog and it got bigger than I could imagine.

I wish you all well... and peace be with Neda.

Read more about the Philadelphia Weekly story here. They interview a man named "Q", and its incredibly interesting.

NO Skateboarding Day 2009: The Laws Do Not Apply!

My heart was already beating out of my chest when I got to the stairs.

The plan was incredibly simple: Take the subway to City Hall, go up the stairs, and head to Love Park, skateboard in hand. Give the deck to someone to hold on to while I go and give a brief speech, reminding all the skateboarders of the simple rules and laws, that they can't skate here, but the sidewalks were legally allowed to us. To wear my stuff shirt and tie and show my self as still one of them.

My heart was racing although I knew all would be fine.

Then I saw them, two officers almost waiting to greet me as the skies remained gray above. They wore bright blue shirts and were not happy at my arrival. It was 10:58 AM and from a quick look around... no one was around. An odd sight for Go Skateboarding Day in Philadelphia, very odd indeed. "You know you can't skate here?," the officer asked while making the statement. I knew it very well. Dilworth Plaza has been off limit to skateboarders for years, and I was fine with that.

"I know, " I said, already feeling my lips tremor a little, not very easy though knowing I'm in the right. "Skateboarding is banned here, LOVE Park, and the Municipal Services building-"

"And the sidewalk and anywhere else in Center City."

"Um.... no? I have a copy of the law stating sidewalks are fine with me."

"Look, if we catch you, it's a $1000 fine, you loose your board, and you go to jail! I've already got 10 skateboards in my trunk! Now I'm giving you a warning!"

The other officer stood there, loosing his patience as I tried to calmly explain that... well, they were wrong. Its always an odd spot to be in, and you rarely ever win. But I had the law on my side, and a copy on my cellphone... that was getting increasingly hard to get to. As I tried to reason, the other officer took out his citation pad, ready to give me a ticket for doing nothing more than stating my case.

"Are you filming this? Go ahead, I don't care! Get my badge number, too!"
"I'm not filming you."
"Yeah, of course your not!"

While this was happening, a woman on a bicycle began to ride up towards the plaza and continued onto the plaza. "Well, aren't you going to arrest her? She's breaking the law!" "No."
"Why not?" "Because bicyclist... bicyclists don't go around jumping everywhere and damaging property." Anyone will tell you that... no, that isn't the truth. Anyone will also tell you that this was discrimination and selective enforcement of the law. A law that clearly reads on a sign that skateboarders, scooters, and bicyclists are banned from riding Dilworth Plaza, but I'm being targeted for simply walking peacefully? For getting ready to skateboard within the law?

I took a deep breath and tried to find the law. I couldn't, and I was just getting frustrated. I left the steps, crossed the street, and wrote down his badge number in my book. I will be reporting him to his officer.

The rest of the day was a proverbial washout. Officers surrounded LOVE Park, showing very little of it for skateboarders, and the Municipal Services Building was as well. Other skateboarders arrived to enjoy the day... but to no avail. I took photos, did interviews, talked to people, and spent the entire day doing that.

Talking to some skaters outside the 7-Eleven across LOVE Park, we talked a bit and soon 4 Red Bull cars pulled up. We knew what this meant: FREE RED BULL!!! We all ran over to get a free soda and the ladies organized a skateboarding contest. The police permitted it to happen, and a lot of fun was had by all!

I walked back over to Dilworth Plaza to talk to some people when I ran into someone I knew who was also taking photos. We soon headed up to "3 Block", a famous local skate spot, and taking a ton of photos there of local skaters. A quick trip to McDonalds and I was on my way back to Center City.

It was now 2PM and the area was still empty. Sporadic skateboarders here and there, while the Eastern Side of City Hall on Market Street was home to those who chose to enjoy the day unhindered. By 3:30PM, I had had my fill of not being able to enjoy what I legally should have been allowed to and headed home. Of course, this was right after taking some awesome photos at the Criminal Justice Center. Oh, the irony of it all!

Meanwhile, the entire day also consisted of being harangued by homeless people and drug addicts for change everywhere, and of people questioning why, exactly, skateboarders were being harangued.

I could go on and on about how things like this detract from the image of the city. I could go on and on about how much money skateboarding brings to Philadelphia, or would if enforcement of the law wasn't as biased. I could go on, even, about the simple fact that the office who spoke to me was wrong and that the most I would be fine would only be $300 as well as confiscation of the board, with actually being sent to jail being a last resort. I could go on and on about all of this.

Today... today I won't. Instead, I will simply sit and wait. I've got a long article to write about skateboarding in Philadelphia.

For now, though, lets focus on those who did get to enjoy this beautiful day! I have photos of people making the most of it and pulling off some simply incredible and wonderful tricks!

IRAN PROTEST: Candle Light Vigil At The National Constitution Center

WHEN: JUNE 21st - 8PM
WHERE: National Constitution Center Lawn - 5th and Market

On June 21st, a large group of people will converge on the lawn of the National Constitution Center to hold a candle light vigil for those who have died in the protests in Iran over the past week. Please come out and support the fallen and support the people of Iran as they peacefully strive for Democracy in their home country!

PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN CANDLE! This is a very sporadic, spontaneous event, put together by myself and a few other people who want to go out and do something in recognition of those who have lost their lives in this horrible battle for freedom!

Look for someone with a Mohawk. I won't be hard to miss.

TWITTER INFO: Please use #PhiladelphiaVigil as your tag when posting about this event, and please spread the word!

UPDATE: Thanks to EVERYONE who came out to the vigil! It was incredibly moving to see so many people, and I'm glad you were able to make it! If you weren't, please check out the photos and my words about this. Thank you.

Go Skate Day! Philadelphia 2009: Preparing for Battle...

The drums of war are being sound.

The cries of repression are being heard.

A chill is fills the air as a culture is being squashed by unjust brutality against the innocent.

Go Skate Day is almost here.

Philadelphia Weekly did what I think is, hands down, the single best article on skateboarding in Philadelphia in a VERY long time
! While most articles on the topic deal solely with LOVE Park and the issues surrounding that, Philadelphia Weekly's Catherine Caperella dove deeper, pointing to a recent rise in acts of police brutality and unwarranted attacks on skateboarders by the police as well against skateboarders who were, according to the story, not breaking the law at the time.

I was out on Go Skateboarding day in 2007... it was one hell of a day! It was a lot of fun, a ton of energy, and I tried to break up a disagreement between the skateboarders and the police. I actually knew the officer from a few months earlier. They were really nice, really awesome guys... I was shocked by what I saw. I talked to them and told them we would leave City Hall. We were told by the officer you saw earlier in the video trying to break us up. I come in at 2:45:

I wound up getting a ton of support, and being a bit of a figurehead. Not perfect, mind you, but a decent day nonetheless.

So, that said, I have some tips for all the skateboarders in Philadelphia on how to act on Go Skate day:

  • 1. Despite the rumors, no, you can not skateboard at Dilworth Plaza, LOVE Park, or the Municipal Services building on Go Skate! Day. They didn't change the law, they didn't give out permits... don't bother.

  • 2. If you are confronted by an officer, be as polite as possible if they are trying to be polite as well. If they immediately start hassling you, ask yourself A) Am I skating in a place where I know its illegal and B) Do they have a point? If you're able to, simply speak in a calm matter and co-operate. If they become abusive or start by using force despite the fact you are not doing anything to warrant it, REPORT IT! Get a badge number, post it on a blog... get the word out about them! Simply fearing retaliation will do nothing morethan allow it to continue!

  • 3. Try to hit the legal places, like FDR Park on Broad and Delaware Avenue. The best way to get there is to take the Broad Street Subway to the end of the line (Pattison Ave) and keep going South. You can't miss it. There's also "3-Block" off Broad and Girard. Trust me, you can't miss it on Sunday. Just listen and look for a ton of skateboarders. Also Cecil B. Moore and certain areas on Temple's campus.

  • 4. Make sure you always carry a copy of the actual law, §10-610. Skateboarding, Rollerblading and Bicycling on Public Property! If any officer says your breaking the law and you know you're in the right, take this out. It states, and I quote, skateboarding is allowed on "public roads, highways, bicycle and/or skateboard paths, or sidewalks abutting private property....... Recreation Department facilities, which facilities shall be subject to the rules and regulations of the Recreation Department." So if you get hassled for skateboarding on the sidewalk, you're in the right!

That said, have fun, be safe.... and make a lot of noise!

EDIT: I plan on doing something at 11AM on Sunday. Details coming soon. Wear a shirt and tie.

I Don't Want to Be the "Angriest Man in Philadelphia" Anymore

I don't want to be so angry anymore.

Back in December, I met someone who was awesome and great. She was smart, funny, and more than anything else, just a great person to be around and know. We became friends fast, and for the last 6 months, shes been the single greatest supporter I could have. In a lot of ways, if it wasn't for her, I don't think I would have accomplished 90% of what I have. Her support is just amazing.

Last March we had a photo shoot at my house. I was trying to get her to act angry, so I faked how I looked when I get mad. She was actually kinda shocked since I'm such a nice guy. She's mentioned it from time to time since then.

On Friday we hung out in New York City. I was having a great time, something happened, and I got angry for the first time around her. I went to a store to cool off, and someone blocked my way into the store trying to get me to buy their CD. I don't mind, but they were right in my way. As my friend joined me and we left the store, I was able to calm down... until the guy came at me again. I snapped and yelled at him, full tilt. He finally left us alone.

We sat in a park and talked and everything seemed OK. We went around Manhattan having fun and pulling pranks, and we soon got to Times Square. When we did, someone else tried to sell me their CD. I told them "No thanks", and then they got personal. It got even uglier, my friend having to hold me back.

She was quiet the rest of the night and took a cab home from the bus station. I took the train.

I haven't heard back from her since.

I thought about why. I thought about it a lot. I talked to the only other person I can talk to about these things and they were, surprisingly enough to me, the bluntest I've ever seen about this. I already knew the problem, and I'll share this with you. Maybe you're in the same spot as me, or maybe you're close to it and you don't realize it.

I've said I hate people. I don't like when they make fun of me, I don't like when they stare, and I don't like how they act. The reality was that it was never about them; it was always about me. I'm not happy with myself. I haven't been happy with myself for a long time. In turn... I'm always angry.

I thought I was showing my friend who I was; the reality was that I wasn't. I was showing her the ugliest side of me, the one I hate the most, the one where I'm not happy with myself or anything. The side of me that is nothing but anger and rage.

And I don't want to be that guy anymore.

Being angry all the time doesn't work. It doesn't help. All it does it make you worse and worse and worse. If you bottle it up, if you don't handle it right, it doesn't just go away. Instead, it festers and feeds and transforms and turns you into something you know you're not! It turns you into something you're better than!

It turned me into a monster. I saw the monster, dead in the eye... and I don't want to know him anymore. I don't want to be a monster. I want to be a man.

Its not for her sake that I do this; its for the sake of myself. Its not for all my friends who have either never seen that side of me, and its not for all my friends who have and were scared off. Its not for the people who care for me, or the people who will or did. Its for myself, for the sake of my well being, for the sake of being a better person!

I don't want to be the "Angriest Man in Philadelphia" anymore. I just want to be a man.

PS: I'm also asking that all my friends who see this please give me a hand with this and please offer some encouragement with this. This is something I can really only succeed in with some help.

FIGHT HATE! - We Need To Fight Back Against These Racist Bastards!

Over the past week, we've seen two acts of terrorism in America. the first was the assassination of George Tiller, a doctor who preformed late-term abortions on women who needed them. His murder was a pro-life believer who is not sorry for what he has done and is rallying others to support him. He is making calls from prison.

Today, we saw an 85-year-old White Supremacist walk into the Holocaust Museum. A man who stormed the building on the same day a play was to open about Anne Frank. A man who was in jail for 11 years because of his hate.

We have seen the face of hate, and today I am telling you that we need to fight back.

In Philadelphia, there seems to be a feeling that racist groups do not exist, nor could, in this city. Those who think that are wrong. Very, very wrong.

For the past few years, a group of men have gathered on the street corners of Philadelphia spewing hatred in every bitter sense of it. They have stood on soap boxes and platforms. They have taken Market Street as a method to preach hatred and racism to any and all who walk by. I have been appalled time and time again to see them attract minds of like-minded people who those that they speak out against do not decry their actions, lest they seem like racists themselves. They spew hatred, taking the Christian Holy Bible and twisting it into their own form.

I speak of a group of Black Supremacists that are called The Israelite School of U.P.K. The group is also known as "The Twelve Tribes of Israel".

The group is no different in terms of objectives than the Ku Klux Klan or the Creativity Movement, formerly the "World Church of the Creator".

It is nothing short of amazing to me that people give these bastards the dignity of respect. In this country, if we like it or not, we are allowed to let others speak and say what they want. To that end, to the means, I will forever hold that close to my heart. But there are lines, there are limits, and even more importantly, there is the right to protest and decry what you hate.

Seeing many black men stand around and listen, as if these idiots are speaking the truth, scares me. It scares me to think that these men are gullible enough to fall for the lies and discrimination these men put forth.

To that end, we as a society need to make a decision. To simply stand idly by why they spew hatred and grow their numbers, to simply stand by and let their hatred breed. If, for nothing else, than to stand back and watch them possibly create domestic terrorists who are inspired by their hatred of non-blacks.... We are saying, as a society, that we are permitting hatred to go forth and rise unopposed.

Two months ago, a memo was released by the department of Homeland Security that stated that there was a "rise in right-wing radical extremists that could be potentially dangerous." That their rhetoric would fall short of telling people to commit acts of violence. It is up to us, right now, to stand up and shout "ENOUGH!"

Racism is, to me, the biggest evil a society can ignore in this day and age. We ignore it, only to hope that it goes away, hoping that by not giving it negative attention, the type of attention we know it craves, it will simply burnout and die. As a so-called "Attention whore", I can tell you for a fact that that is never the case. Ignoring them makes them try harder and once they find an audience, they will not let go. They will continue to grow if they are not opposed.

In the end, not opposing hatred racists simply lets them breed and grow like mildew.

To that end, I am asking you to do something. These men tend to arrive on Market Street on Saturday's . The spots are in front of the Pennsylvania Convention Center around 12th and Market, The Gallery at 9th and Market, and the CVS at 11th and Market around 2PM to 6PM. I want anyone and everyone who reads this to do one simple thing: Protest.

Protest.

PROTEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go out there and TELL THEM they are hateful! TELL THEM they are racits! If you see them, tell them that you don't want their brand of hatred in Philadelphia, in your community! TELL THEM! Yell at them, scream at them, hold up signs, chant, sing protests songs... DON'T do anything violent, but just use your First Amendment Right to go out there and PEACEFULLY PROTEST THEM!

Saturday at 3PM, I'll be there at 12th and Market . I'll have a sign that says "Fight Hate". I'll scream at them, call them the slimy racist bastards they are, and I'll stand until they leave! I'll protest the other racists I see! I'll scream until I lose my voice!

And I'll do it again and again and AGAIN! I WILL NOT let them stand and preach their racism unopposed! I WILL NOT stand idly by why they simply brainwash others to their side!

I have chosen to stay and fight. I hope you will, too.

Peter Schiff - Right About the Economy, May Run Against Chriss Dobb's. Thank God!

I'll make my remarks fairly brief: Chris Dobb has proven himself to be an idiot. Last year as the economy tanked, he blamed the Republican Party for the mess despite the fact that he, himself, permitted the payment of bonuses to AIG executives and was partly responsible for the Freddie and Fannie Mac situation last year.

Seeing him get kicked out by Peter Schiff, who was proven right as far back as 2007 when he said the fundamentals of our economy were weak and we were headed for collapse... well, it would be sweet. Incredibly sweet.

Be An Adult: Clean Up Your Block!

Today I was walking home from the train station and was greeted to a sight I hoped I would never see in my area: Trash. A large amount of trash on the street and sidewalks. Now, admittedly, when I say "Large amount", I don't mean someone took a garbage bag from their kitchen and dumped it on the ground, I mean someone seemed to be throwing out random things from here and there and threw it on the ground.

Today's mess?A discarded "Guess Who?" game, minus the box. There were pieces EVERYWHERE. On top of that, empty bottles and food wrappers, tossed in with minor pieces of trash.

To me, it was a big mess, especially since there rarely is ever any trash in the blocks to and from my house to the station. There's a school not too far and I can only assume some kids did most of it without thinking. On the other hand, it made the neighborhood look really trashy. I don't want to live in the ghetto, thanks.

To everyone who reads this, take note of what I'm about to say:

It took me about 20 minutes to go up and down a city block and clean up all the trash I saw. It wasn't a lot, and it was pretty fast to do. If everyone took 5 minutes, just 5 lousy minutes a week... no one would have a problem with trash in their neighborhood. Go outside your house, look around, and if you see some trash lying around, just pick it up and throw it out.

To me, its about being a responsible adult more than anything else.

THANKS FOR THE LAST-MINUTE HEADS UP! - Dillinger Escape Plain in Philly TOMORROW

Sean Agnew is, without a doubt, the hardest working man in Philadelphia's metal and punk scene. He, and basically he ALONE, has booked ass many kick-ass bands as possible to get them to play Philly, and its been working great. Personally, I'd love to see Wednesday 13 play Philly again, this time at First Unitarian Church since the crowd at The Troc last year for him was low. Shocking since he was able to basically pack and sell-out The Crocodile Rock in Allentown. But that's another story.

I got an e-mail from Sean today about Dillinger Escape Plan. Here's the full e-mail:
*TOMORROW* Wednesday June 10th 8:00pm
At The First Unitarian Church (2125 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA)
All Ages / $15 / Tickets On Sale At R5Productions.com & AKA Music (2nd And Market)
DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN / THE #12 LOOKS LIKE YOU / KNIFE THE GLITTER

If you’ve never seen Dillinger Escape Plan before, here’s the deal: they’re N-U-T-S—nuts. As in bring a helmet to be safe; or at least plan an escape route, because things are bound to get hairy as Greg Puciato howls and heaves like a freshly-freed ape, setting in motion such tech-metal standards as “Sugar Coated Sour,” “Jim Fear,” “Panasonic Youth” and the deliriously catchy “Black Bubblegum.” Seriously now; is there any other band pushing the boundaries of extreme music harder than these guys, as they seamlessly switch between two-minute scorchers and carefully-plotted cracks at pop music? (Well, their twisted version of Top 40 tunes, at least.) As for what’s up with the band’s lineup as of late, longtime guitarist Brian Benoit was forced to quit a few years back due to a serious hand injury, and founding drummer Chris Pennie split in 2007 to focus on his new role in Coheed and Cambria. With that said, Billy Rymer absolutely destroyed his drum kit at some special shows earlier this year (his first one at The Barbary a few months ago!) stepping into Pennie’s dizzying shoes with ease. Jeff Tuttle’s also done a fine job playing the foil to founding guitarist Ben Weinman. Speaking of good ol’ Ben, just try to keep your eyes on him, even on a stage as small as the Church’s. The dude literally swings his guitar around like an axe, whipping up blinding power chords in the process. And you thought you knew what the term guitar hero meant…

You can purchase tickets at r5productions.com or at our box office located at AKA Music (just north of 2nd and Market Sts in Philadelphia)

Pennsylvania Mounted Police on South Street: Nothing to Do

IMG_0039, originally uploaded by LuvataciousSkull.

Just got back from South Street not too long ago and the report is incredibly simple: There's really nothing to report. Its quiet. Really quiet. Nothing happened, just your usual Saturday Night on South Street crowd, some extra people expecting something that never happened, and a ton of cops.

Eh. A least a got an awesome photo from it.

HOLY CRAP! This is My 300th Post! How To Celebrate....

Wow, 300 posts! 300 nuggets of semi-useless information about anything and everything I could come up with over a 2-year period!

How to celebrate... Oh, I know! WITH GIR FROM INVADER ZIM!

ENJOY!

It's First Friday! Why Not Check Out "The Youth Is Revolting"?

Are you sick and tired of hearing about the "South Street Riots"? I'm sick of reporting it, at least for now, and there really is nothing to report right now. So to that end, why not do something awesome! Head on down to Digital Ferret Records where my art show, "The Youth is Revolting!", is still going on!

THE YOUTH IS REVOLTING! - The Art of Larry West at Digital Ferret

Nearly 200 people turned out to the first art show of Philadelphia-native Larry West, turning it into a massive success for all involved!

Fed by a steady stream of blog posts, flyers, and sheer word-of-mouth, Digital Ferret Records 4th Friday event featuring the artwork of Larry West and the bands Red This Ever and Ninetwelve went off without a hitch! Larry, best known for his 2007 mayoral run, came into his own as an artist with pieces that showed not only his political side, but also a focus on artwork that drew influence from artist Pushead and Roy Lichtenstein, a style he likes to call "Sub-Americana".

Larry came in dressed in all black with goggles on his head. When asked why, he stated, "Its because the art scene in this city seems to be littered with people who try too hard to be 'hip'. Too many pastels, too much of the same... this is me, in essence, rejecting it with something better. This is my personal revolt."

West went on to sell a record number of pieces that night for both himself and Digital Ferret. West received strong criticism during the lead-up to the show from Obama supporters for including his piece depicting Obama with the word "Obey" behind him in a piece he calls "False Messiah".

"I'm very happy with this turnout!", West remarked. "I'm just thrilled so many people enjoyed my work!"

On top of a strong opening night, the show will run from today until June 24th, 2009 at Digital Ferret Records at 732 S 4th Street.

Larry West's artwork can be viewed at his website: http://www.larrywestproductions.com

About Larry West: Larry West is best known for his 2007 run for Mayor. He has since then taken a larger turn towards his artwork, and still comments constantly about politics in Philadelphia, and the world.

Funniest Scam I Saw In a While!

I got this e-mail today, I just had to share it:

George Adams
Head of Services for Scam Victims Compensation

OK, if you got a similar e-mail and are asking yourself, "...you know, maybe I can get in on this! I wasn't scammed, but hey, free money!", well... your stupid. Sorry. I had to be blunt. No, just... NO!

Why is this a scam? Well, I'll actually dissect it for you this time:

Attn: Sir/Madam AFRICAN UNION AND UNITED NATIONS SCAM VICTIMS COMPENSATION PAYMENTS.

For starters, there's nothing about this in the news. Nothing. If there was something like this really happening, I think its safe to say it would be headline-news.
This is to bring to your notice that I am delegated from the United Nations to African Union to pay scam victims US$1,000,000:00 (One Million United States Dollars) each. You are listed and approved for this payment as one of the scammed victims to be paid this amount, get back to me as soon as possible for the immediate payments of your US$1,000,000:00 compensations funds.

Why the hell would a DELEGATE from the United Nations send YOU and e-mail? OK, not the best argument in the world since you get "e-mails from the President" or others when you opt for an e-mail list, right? Well, this e-mail is just a plain e-mail with no images, no links... nothing. At the same time, they're stating they'll give you One Million Dollars. Let's get this straight: They're giving EVERYONE $1,000,000. OK, not bad....

Other victims who have not been contacted can submit their application as well for scrutiny and possible consideration. You are thereby advised to contact the private client office of the Bank of Africa (BOA) through the following information.
So anyone who feels they got scammed by someone in a nation they've never been to by an e-mail they got are being advised to do the same... with another person with another bank?

Huh.

A payment is through Automated Teller Machine (ATM).Resolution and agreement was therefore signed by United Nations and African Union that beneficiaries are to bear the responsibility of mailing their ATM Card to their destinations when they cannot make it down to Bank of Africa( BOA) Cotonou-Republic of Benin, forpick up. Well, here's the main tip-off right there! A payment through an ATM?! REALLY?!

Screw it! This is a scam, a stupid one, and one of the dumbest e-mails I've ever seen!
