The Demoness Said KILL! - My Sweet New Skateboard from Zazzle!

I came home yesterday to my custom skateboard deck made by Zazzle.com. I've trusted these folks with helping to spread my art and designs through merchandising, and they've yet to disappoint. This morning I finally cracked open the package of the skateboard I ordered and, well, it was AWESOME!!!!

For the skateboard techs, here are the stats:
Independent Stage 1 Trucks
Ricta Natural Wheels

Bullet Bearings

Really happy with the deck! Took it for a test run, and it ran smoothly out the box! No lie! Easy glide, nice turns... it was basically fine-tuned out the box! SWEET!

Make sure to get your own here:

Live Fast, Die Old! Skateboard

I guess in a few ways this is a sort of "old school" skateboard deck design. I did this piece back in 2004 or so (which makes me feel even older than I should) and its one of my favorite pieces ever! I did it in response to all the people who think they deserve to get off the trains and buses first. You know, the little old ladies who rush to get off the train first, yet take forever to get off the train itself and walk to wherever they're going? Entitlement... age doesn't mean you get it.

So if you can, pick up this deck and support me fiscally!

Go Skate Day! Philadelphia 2009: Preparing for Battle...

The drums of war are being sound.

The cries of repression are being heard.

A chill is fills the air as a culture is being squashed by unjust brutality against the innocent.

Go Skate Day is almost here.

Philadelphia Weekly did what I think is, hands down, the single best article on skateboarding in Philadelphia in a VERY long time
! While most articles on the topic deal solely with LOVE Park and the issues surrounding that, Philadelphia Weekly's Catherine Caperella dove deeper, pointing to a recent rise in acts of police brutality and unwarranted attacks on skateboarders by the police as well against skateboarders who were, according to the story, not breaking the law at the time.

I was out on Go Skateboarding day in 2007... it was one hell of a day! It was a lot of fun, a ton of energy, and I tried to break up a disagreement between the skateboarders and the police. I actually knew the officer from a few months earlier. They were really nice, really awesome guys... I was shocked by what I saw. I talked to them and told them we would leave City Hall. We were told by the officer you saw earlier in the video trying to break us up. I come in at 2:45:

I wound up getting a ton of support, and being a bit of a figurehead. Not perfect, mind you, but a decent day nonetheless.

So, that said, I have some tips for all the skateboarders in Philadelphia on how to act on Go Skate day:

  • 1. Despite the rumors, no, you can not skateboard at Dilworth Plaza, LOVE Park, or the Municipal Services building on Go Skate! Day. They didn't change the law, they didn't give out permits... don't bother.

  • 2. If you are confronted by an officer, be as polite as possible if they are trying to be polite as well. If they immediately start hassling you, ask yourself A) Am I skating in a place where I know its illegal and B) Do they have a point? If you're able to, simply speak in a calm matter and co-operate. If they become abusive or start by using force despite the fact you are not doing anything to warrant it, REPORT IT! Get a badge number, post it on a blog... get the word out about them! Simply fearing retaliation will do nothing morethan allow it to continue!

  • 3. Try to hit the legal places, like FDR Park on Broad and Delaware Avenue. The best way to get there is to take the Broad Street Subway to the end of the line (Pattison Ave) and keep going South. You can't miss it. There's also "3-Block" off Broad and Girard. Trust me, you can't miss it on Sunday. Just listen and look for a ton of skateboarders. Also Cecil B. Moore and certain areas on Temple's campus.

  • 4. Make sure you always carry a copy of the actual law, §10-610. Skateboarding, Rollerblading and Bicycling on Public Property! If any officer says your breaking the law and you know you're in the right, take this out. It states, and I quote, skateboarding is allowed on "public roads, highways, bicycle and/or skateboard paths, or sidewalks abutting private property....... Recreation Department facilities, which facilities shall be subject to the rules and regulations of the Recreation Department." So if you get hassled for skateboarding on the sidewalk, you're in the right!

That said, have fun, be safe.... and make a lot of noise!

EDIT: I plan on doing something at 11AM on Sunday. Details coming soon. Wear a shirt and tie.

THE CHOSEN! Skateboard

The Chosen skateboard
The Chosen by LuvataciousSkull

I did this back in November, and its one of my favorite pieces ever! I did it based on the song "The Chosen" by Unearth, which is only available (I think!) on the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Soundtrack. I'm not a big Unearth fan, but that song constantly blows me away every time I hear it!

This deck is a personal favorite, and I hope you get the joy of shredding on it one day yourselves!

Changes Are Coming...

Sometimes things in life go from good to bad, bad to worst, and terrible to great.

Right now, I'm basically in the middle of a lot of things, both good and bad, and through it all I still plan on going on with Larry West Productions, my freelance business. There are going to be a few changes to how the website and MySpace look, as well as the stores and a few other things as well.

Few updates I can mention:
  • The RULES Sneakers are now in limbo due to a problem with typography. Zazzle.com will not allow products to have reversed type, which actually was part of the design for the sneaker. It's going to take a while to use their own type tool and basically re-do the designs there, so right now, it's not looking good.

  • I'm still working on skateboard designs and plan on launching the store before the end of the month, if not sooner.

  • I have a few pieces waiting to be inked and I still have a few more to create and still new ideas popping in my mind at any given time. Keep your eyes on this and my site for changes.

  • Mark Skull Pirate Radio, my Internet-Only Metal and Punk station, is regaining ground it lost last month when it was turned off and is now nearly at the same level it was before the shut-down. If you haven't listened to it already, do it! DO IT NOW!

That's it! Stay metal, watch this space, and have a good one!

UPDATES: Books, Skateboards, and Sneakers

OK, lot of projects going on, so here's an update:

1. "Monsters in My Head" and "The Art of Larry West" Portfolio Books

"Monsters in My Head", a book I've been drawing and writing about various evil thoughts that pop in my head, has been delayed indefinably for a variety of reasons, namely time. The book is incredibly time consuming to do and create, and I've been force to hold off for the time being to focus on other projects.

Meanwhile, the still-untitled portfolio book of my work is on hold while I find a way to make and print it and work on a few more pieces. I've got 3 pieces on my desk waiting to be inked and finished, and another dozen or so waiting for me to bring them to life. The book is on hold to see if they will be added and I'm going to have help editing it as well.

2. The Future of Larry West Custom Sneakers

As you know, I've been doing a lot of custom sneakers. Right now at roll-out, only women sizes are available and I've done a total of 4 designs, 3 of which are based on my RULES series. All shoes are made my Ked's and available through Zazzle.com, but all designs need to be approved by Ked's before going to sale. Right now, there's practically a million shoes designs that need to be approved, so it will be a while before I get final approval. I should know in a week.

3. Larry West Custom Skateboards Are Coming Soon!

The main reason for the delay in the launch of Mark Skull Boards (Larry West Boards?) is because I'm trying to determine the marketability of it (Which is really good to me!), cost (next to nothing, really), and promotions. Oh, and the pesky little problem of designing the site for it as well as deciding on an actual name. Right now, I want to go with Mark Skull Boards since that was the original name of the company I had in mind back in 2004 when I first made a push to do something like this.

4. Nuns Behaving Badly?

The reason this one got held up is just too complicated to explain and mainly has to do with the "How" aspect and it basically growing and turning into something I never expected. That's the cool thing about ideas sometimes; when you just let them be and grow, they can do really weird things! If your not sure what I'm talking about, I'm glad to leave it a little in the dark. Look for an update and pics in a week.

That's about it for now. More updates as they come and, maybe... a new logo?

Coming Soon: SKATEBOARD DECKS! SERIOUSLY!

I wish I was lying, but no, I only now stumbled across how to make and sell custom skateboards! Well, after 10 years of waiting and 5 years of trying to do it myself, I finally found that, yes, there is a company online that WILL print and sell your custom skateboard decks!

90% of all the work you've seen from me has been, you guessed it, designed for sneakers and skateboard decks! I see them as awesome ways to express my art and really, just more interesting than a poster.

NOT READY YET! But here's a teaser:
