Ozzfest 2010: Photos From That Night...

Despite all the anger and spite that's come from me lately... life isn't bad. :)

Enjoy these shots! I've got everyone from Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Crue with Vince Neil and Nikki Sixx, Rob Halford and his band Halford, DevilDriver, and many, many more acts from Sunday's show at the Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden.

8-Album Mind: Prince of Darkness

Ozzy Osbourne -

Tribute ♠♠♠♠
No Rest for the Wicked ♠♠♠♠
No More Tears ♠♠♠♠♠
Black Rain ♠

Today's list is both short and just one artist: Ozzy. Just say Ozz. Literally.

Well, not really. I actually listened to nearly all of "Cowboys from Hell" by Pantera, but I'm not counting that because I plan on really listening and getting into it tomorrow. It was the type of day at work where, really, you and no one else wants to work. Ozzy is kinda good for that; it passes the time, entertains you, and makes you smile.

Now, I'll admit, I'm one of the first guys to out Ozzy (even as a fan) of a lot of things, namely the fact he doesn't write a lot of the songs he sings, or he's only as good as the guitarists he works with (Ultimate Sin, anyone?). That aside, albums like "Tribute", "No Rest for the Wicked", and"No More Tears" are some of the best and strongest albums he has recorded, and are some of the best ever made overall. No man is an island, and Ozzy proves it time and time again whenever he goes into the studio with a bunch of great musicians and writers.

What can I say about "Tribute" that hasn't been said a million times? Hearing Randy Rhodes, arguably the best guitarist Ozzy ever had, play Ozzy's material live, as well as shred on old classics from the Sabbath era is just great! Hearing Zakk bring his own brand of guitar playing to "No Rest for the Wicked" was great and, despite Rolling Stone's negative review (just a writer being an ass), the album has since gone on to be hailed as a classic.

"No More Tears" has to be Ozzy's strongest album to date, with tracks such as "Mr. Tinkertrain", "I Don't Want to Change the World", the title track, and the tearjerker "Mama I'm Coming Home"... this album is just incredible and hard to resist.

In hindsight, I regret selling off "Ozzmosis" and "Down to Earth" because the former really was a good album. I sold it really out of spite and because at the time I was "growing up" and "maturing", terms that I used to justify not liking what I used to and trying not to look like I was still in high school. I think we all have albums we bought during high school and after we graduate, we kinda want them to stay behind as well. "Ozzmosis" was a good album, though. "Down to Earth" was OK, and I still own the cassette of "Original Sin", although I only listened to the thing once....

Meanwhile, "Black Rain" feels less like Ozzy even trying to put out a solid album and more like Sharon trying to milk her golden calf for he's worth. Sadly, Sharon's influence over Ozzy since 2000 has been a reason for a lot of the displeasure metalheads have had for Ozzy lately, and it's a shame. The fact that Ozzy recorded an album that felt incredibly rushed and sloppy in order to sell a few thousand more copies with the promise of a pre-sale code for the free Ozzfest in 2007 (complete with cardboard packaging and no booklet), later to be re-released in a jewel case with booklet and all (during Ozzfest, no less!).... the album will most likely forever stand as Ozzy's worst since "Ultimate Sin".

8-Album Mind: Here's to The Old School!

Overkill - Necroshine ♠♠♠♠
Overkill - Killbox 13 ♠♠♠♠
Overkill - Relix IV ♠♠♠
Overkill - Immortalis ♠♠♠ REVIEW
Ozzfest 2002 ♠ SOLD
Ozzy Osbourne - Diary of a Madman ♠♠♠
Overkill - Extended Versions ♠♠♠♠♠

Overkill die-hards will notice that I skipped two big (and if you follow the band, they're big) releases, namely the incredible album Bloodletting and the live album that followed, Wrecking Everything. They're not here only because today was a kinda throw-away day at work (we're throwing this big-ass party tomorrow), so I decided to save it for when I got home and just draw. Look for them tomorrow or Sunday.

That aside, not much to say today. Killbox 13, Relix IV, and the Ozzfest CD had their last chances today, and it may shock you that I did list Overkill as a possible cut. After Bloodletting, it seemed that age his Overkill like a ton of bricks, their more recent albums being heavy but not as memoriable. Killbox 13 was incredible in every aspect; incredibly heavy, brilliant lyrics, and a very intestesting album. Relix IV still isn't as good to me, and Immortalis still kinda sits (save a few tracks).

It's also worth noting that die-hard fans also don't exactly like "Extended Version" because, like the rest of the BMG series, it's just a live album they already did made into a one-disc comp. Oddly enough, for that reason alone, this albums succeds! It's all killer, no filler, and going from "Hello from the Gutter" to "Elimination" simply rips and tears! Great disc, definitely get this if your either are a fair-weather fan or not!

Meanwhile, the Ozzfest CD is on the way out. When I got this album, it was the fall of 2002 and in the looming shadow of a war with Iraq. The anti-war vibe was strong, not only with the informed public who knew better (the vocal "minority") and the sentiment of that feeling was strong at that Ozzfest, with "War Pigs" opening the album. More than anything, nostalgia has made me keep this disc because man does it suck! Yeah, Drowning Pool covered "Creeping Death", but so what? It was a mediocre cover by a mediocre band. The fact that bands like Adema got record deals is just sad. If anything, I may keep a copy of Andrew WK basically struggling with Kelly Osboure to sing "She is Beautiful" and Zakk Wylde with Soil singing their only decent song "Halo".

"Diary of a Madman" is a simply brilliant album. Now, you may wonder why "Blizard of Ozz" isn't listed first and it's simple; I'm an idiot who thought that not onlt did this precede that album, but I always thought this was an EP. No, you read that right, I always thought this was an EP. But that's only because it's one of the few albums from Ozzy I bought that had the smaller cover. Oh, and I sold Blizzard of Ozz. Why? It was a great album, but it was also the one where $haron Osbourne had the original drums and bass parts re-recorded. If I can, I'll but the ORIGINAL instead.

Rock & Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, Calgary!

For all the belly aching people like myself and others do about how great Canada, our neighbor to the North is, it sure seems like they like being assholes sometimes!

While the notion of noise police may seem a crazy train of thought for heavy-metal icon Ozzy Osbourne, city officials will be closely counting decibels at today's Monsters of Rock festival.

When told noise police would be keeping tabs on the McMahon Stadium show, Osbourne thought he hadn't heard right and sought clarification from his wife, Sharon.

"Are you joking?" Osbourne then replied during an airport press conference yesterday.

Sadly, Ozzy, no, and it get's worst. The limit of the show is a whopping 65 Decibles, about the same noise level as traffic in that area. Or, in reality, the average level of a conversation. Need proof?

http://www.gcaudio.com/resources/howtos/loudness.html

As you can see from this chart, 65 Decibles is about as loud as a... piano practice. A bass drum ALONE is 106 DB! Calgary, go fuck yourselves!
