Helping Out Agains the Swine Flu

It's safe to say that, while this event seems to be overblown, there is reason for people to get involved, if only to help others understand what's going on out there. To that effect, I've created a flier with facts to help everyone out there. Also, 50% of all the profits from products with this image from now until May 22nd will be donated to the Red Cross.

We are currently seeing this become close to being a Level 6 Pandemic by the World Health Organization. While I think we are all over-reacting right now, I wanted to do something to try and help educate people about this, as well as help a chairty along the way.

As of 4/29/2009, Swine Flu has been upgraded to a Level 5 Disease by WHO, which is a step away from a full-blown pandemic. In the eyes of myself, and many others around the country, this entire situation is overblown and a joke. At least, hopefully its all this will be.

Why I've Been So Hard On Obama, And Why You Should, Too

I am not a conservative, nor am I a liberal.

I was anti-Bush for the last 8 years and I've been a supporter of Ron Paul and Arlen Specter. I've been a fan of Al Franken and for legalizing same-sex marriage.

I am the undefinable, the unpredictable, the opinionated and free-thinking independent.

The last 8 years taught me something, something I thought would be remembered after 1-20-2009: That our leaders, no matter what we may personally think of them, must always be questioned, that it is our duty to not just accept what we were told but to think about if what they want to do is not only best for this country and ourselves, but if it was even feasible.

In 2002, Bush had a 62% approval rating. He had enjoyed support from his base through 9/11, which then put him over the top as we all said we wanted and needed faith in our leader, despite how we felt about him. By 2003, we was ready to declare war on Iraq, a decision that millions across the country, and the world, felt was wrong and stupid. We were told we were fools, we hated America, and that we were traitors. We were given a $300 check in the mail during his first term because we had a surplus and to help stimulate the economy. In the end, many said these moves were stupid and we were still told to sit down and shut up.

Here is it, 2009, and I see history repeating.

We were told that a Stimulus Bill, a bill that was meant to help us, needed to be passed and updated in order to save America. This bill was bigger and thicker than the USA PATRIOT ACT and was passed even quicker than that document! We have a president with a 65% approval rating going into his 100th day in office, and we have seen his leadership restore some faith in this country once again. All this, despite the fact he still favors warrant less wiretaps, will not punish those who committed war crimes in our government, ignored the dissent of what he considered a minority, and has had many of him nominees drop out because they were corrupt.

We are at a time where we face an economic meltdown, 2 wars, climate change, a problem with Social Security and Medicare, AND a possible (albeit kinda dumb) pandemic of Swine Flu. It's early in this administration, and dissent is still needed now. The time to ask questions is when no one else is, and right now the only dissent heard is dismissed as a bunch of insane conservatives. Even that has begun to change, even if only a little bit, with Obama-fan Keith Olbermann even attacking Obama for the stance on Wiretapping Americans.

But asking questions about Obama doesn't mean I hate the man or "want him to fail". I want Obama to succeed and to do well. I did vote for the man. His success is the success for everyman, woman, and child and future generations, and by showing dissent, by asking questions, we ensure that we see and understand what is going on. Some take my dissent as being "dissent for the sake of dissent", when I simply don't believe so. If everything was going fine, if there weren't any problems with what he was doing, I would simply let it go and move on. The problem, though, is that there are things that must be asked and doing so is what we need to do.

"We should have faith in our president, you know? We can't know everything about what's going on, and we don't have the type of information he does. We should just trust him to do what's best for us." I heard this in 2002 and I'm hearing it now. This is what I'm worried about, and this is why I show dissent.

First thing first: STOP BLAMING EVERYONE ELSE FOR THIS!!!!

Period! Stop! Shut up! CNN has the balls, I repeat, THE BALLS to say, "Twitter is promoting fear and terror over Swine Flu." Wish I was kidding. It's insane because you can't blame Twitter for promoting this: CNN has basically devoted 80% of their coverage to this! I've been watching CNN for a while, and all-day yesterday was just... insane.

Then you have Keith Olbermann and The Huffington Post saying that the GOP is to blame because they took anti-pandemic funding out of the Stimulus Bill. At the same time, that funding was put back into another bill.

So, that said, can we please, please, PLEASE stop blaming other people for this? Or, at least, the wrong people.

That said, the media has blown this entire story into proportions I can't believe! At this rate, you would think your watching clips from 28 Days Later, and how we must beware the "infected".

I had never heard either band until today, and I can honestly say nintetwelve are the most interesting. They only have one song on their profile, but it's really good. It's dance/electronica mixed with industrial. I think it was inspired by Aeon Flux, one of my favorite shows of all time.

So, that said, this is going to be one heck of a show! I've been planning it since late-January and its actually nearly done in terms of planning. What's left it putting it all together. I'll have a lot of posts about putting an art show together which, in the end, I want to turn into one really good, really smart article.

Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage in Philadelphia = How To Save Philly!

In the episode of The Simpsons "There's Something About Marrying", Springfield faces the reputation of being one of the worst towns in America. At a meeting to decide how to solve this and bring back tourists, Lisa suggests legalizing Same-Sex Marriage. In turn, Moe mentions that doing so, "I can charge so much for them special drinks, like a Martini!" Mayor Quimby quickly quips, "All in favor of legalizing gay money- er, gay marriage, say "aye!" The entire crowd goes "AYE!".

Simply put, same-sex marriage = money!

An activist mayor in San Francisco legalized same-sex marriage in his city because he realized that, yes, same-sex couples should be allowed to be married. It's a simple right if you ask me, and one that Philadelphia, a city with a long history of supporting LBGT rights, should be pushing right now!

It MIGHT be possible to push it here, largely because of a few reasons:

1. Pennsylvania is, technically, not a state, it's a commonwealth. Because of that, cities are allowed to make certain rules that aren't covered by the state, no matter how dumb (age limits to run, anyone?) is they are in the City Charter.
   


2. Since the rest of the state seems hellbent on not giving us any money in the future from gambling revenues since we, as a city, have been so adamant about not wanting one, legalizing same-sex marriage makes up the revenue and then some.

Even if it isn't legally possible, this is one of the very few, very rare times when I am encouraging our leaders to break the law. This is a matter of civil rights more than anything else, and something that would make the most sense.

To those who think it's a bad idea, think about it like this: If we don't do this, we could see more empty house, more empty hotel rooms, shrinking revenue, higher taxes, and a reduction of city services and further urban decay. I'd rather have two women get married than that, thank you!

In the end, same-sex marriage would be a major boom for this city! Couples from all around the area, from New Jersey to Delaware and other states, will come to Philly for the right and chance to legally be wed! This means tourist dollars, this means people permanently moving here... this means more revenue for the City of Philadelphia, and another smart, trailblazing way to help the City of Philadelphia not only help solve it's budget problem, but also be seen as a beacon of freedom.

I love Non-Sequiter, it's one of my favorite comic strips of all time. This one... I won't lie, it has me really confused.

"Thou Shalt Not Publish Content for Free... Stupid."

I'm not 100% sure what he's referring to. Is it to people on Deviant Art who give away, literally, their rights to brushes and patterns so people can download and own them for free? The large number of people creating comic strips for free online with hopes someone is going to donate to them or buy their stuff?

Or is he talking about people who commit copyright infringement? The Pirate Bay 4 were convicted on copyright infringement on Friday, and it was a little bit of a shock since they did make a decent claim as to the fact that they didn't actually have the content, just basically told people where to get it.

Eh...

The Tea Bag Protest: What Went Good, What Went Wrong

Today is Tax Day.

To some people, it is a day of dread and fear, one when American's are afraid of making sure they file their taxes on time. For others, it's just another day since they already filed them, or they are so poor they don't have to.

But this year, a portion of our American public has decided that enough is enough. Are we Taxed Enough Already? Apparently so. Today the TEA Parties were held at cities around the country.

Now, the best thing I can do is explain what this protest was originally about and go form there.

ORIGINS:

The idea for the protest, depending on who you ask, basically boils down to opposition to the Federal Reserve. At it's core, people are sick and tired of paying a yearly income tax. The solution to this varies, but plans have gone to taking more from your pay check to creating a national sales tax. I'm not in favor of either move, but another reason for the protest was anger over the stimulus bill and passing, and that is something I agree with to some degree.

So, let's get this straight: The protests were meant to go against the Federal Reserve.

Now, who organized this movement? Again, it differs on who you ask, but it was largely Libertarians. The Libertarian party is a mixture of conservatives and liberals, a group of people who strictly believe in the US Constitution. Ron Paul, who ran as a Republican for President last year, was a member of the party not too long ago.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MOVEMENT:

What happened is that, over a period of time, the protests were hijacked... sort of.

Around the end of March, more and more members of the Republican Party started to latch on and use the protests as a sort of "rallying point", a way to restore the Republican Party brand. Conservatives began to latch onto it as well, and soon, Fox News began to muscle itself in as a sort of "sponsor". In response, liberal media reporters such as Keith Olbermann and the Huffington Post began to label the event as nothing more than an "anti-Obama event", "A conservative rallying point", among other things.

Other media outlets began to take some sides, namely showing the event as a group of fringe extremists on the Right taking their anger and frustrations out on the Obama Administration.

In return, the movement was virtually eaten away from the inside out. What could, and to a degree, should have been an event to simply protest the federal reserve became a rallying point for conservatives, basically aimless, and muddled with things that it did not need.

But did it entirely fail?

THE RESULT:

While it is frustrating and angry as a supporter of this to see it corrupted, it didn't fail. It made national headlines without the derogatory "tea bagging" jokes, and President Obama himself stated that, starting now, that there would be changes to the US Tax Code to make the tax system more fair. In my opinion, the protests helped to push that along a littler faster and made it more of an issue, which means that, to some degree, it did succeed.

MY 2 CENTS:

It's a shame that the protests were so heavily marginalized. A movement that started organically, a movement to protests what citizens thought was wrong with the US Banking and Federal Reserve was , instead, turned into a rallying point for a political party that did not represent their ideals, or, at the very least, may have begun to re-embrace those ideals. I was going to one here in Philadelphia at Love Park at noon, but found out that the organizers pushed it, foolishly enough, to Saturday at noon instead.

People still attended. And Philberity decided to play a dirty, dirty angel:

1) It’s on, with a cast of perhaps 200-all-whites.
2) Not a lot of anti-Obama setiment on the signage, but man oh man, what did European Socialists do to these people?
3) Biggest applause for…the mention of Glen Beck

Nuff said.

To their credit, they are quoting a reader, but still, a dirty thing to print. I would have attended but, like I said, I thought it was postponed.

Did You Ever Wake Up and Know That the Day was Going to Suck?

When I woke up this morning, I had a feeling something bad was going to happen. I didn't know what, I didn't know how... but something, something bad was going to happen. My bills were coming up, so that could have been it... no, they were taken care of, or at least enough so I didn't have to worry about it. I spent the rest of the morning angry, grumpy, and not in a good mood. I was mad and scared and I didn't know why.

I tried to keep it to myself, not take it out on anyone, and I did an OK job. Not great... just OK. People could tell something was wrong, but no one asked. Good thing, because I didn't know why.

At 1:50PM I went back to my desk. I actually was feeling a little bit better; the cleaning woman was looking over my shoulder while I was sketching and smiled and another woman in the room had told me she liked my work last week. It made me happy to know that I made others happy with my art, the one thing I enjoy... and it made me feel better. I was still grumpy when I went back to my desk.

Then I found out Harry Kalis died.

I don't talk about sports much, and I couldn't tell you more than 5 people on the Phillies right now, or really more than 2 any year before last. I'm not a sports nut, but I love my Philadelphia Sports teams, and I have ALWAYS loved the Phillies. To me, they're the embodiment of what it means to be a Philadelphian. The never say die attitude, to strive for the best, and to try to achieve the best, despite what others will say.

Growing up, I didn't listen to a lot of games. I still don't. It's largely because of lack of time. I've been to 3 games in person. My first was against the Washington Nationals in August of 2006, and the Phillies won in the 12th inning. The other two were night games against the Atlanta Braves in September 2008. The Phillies lost both nights.

But the one thing that always made a Phillies game a Phillies game was Harry. Harry had the type of voice that took you back to a time when, at least to you, things seemed better. His voice recalled the golden era of radio broadcasting, had a tone of having lived through the worst years and some of the best. He had a voice as familiar in tone and ring as a church bell, or, to me, like Lemmy Kilmeister.

A co-worker asked me why I was depressed, and I mentioned what I just told you; I didn't know. I didn't think they were a big baseball fan, so I said, "Did you hear? Th guy who announces the Phillies games died today." "Wow, really?! How old was he?" I was kinda shocked she knew, but I forgot she was a fan like me. "Yeah. He was 73." "How did he die?" "Well... old age, I guess. He was 73."

"But 73 is pretty young these days." Wow. It really is, isn't it?

Kreator & Exodus Last Night At The Troc: One Of My Top 5 Shows!

Last night was nothing short of amazing!

I got to the venue at 5:30PM, 30 minutes before the show. The Trocadero normally doesn't allow lines to form until 30 minutes before a show, and I thought since the show wasn't sold out, I would be fine. WRONG! About 80 screaming metal heads were already there, and to me, that was a good sign! By the times the doors opened, the line was around the block, everyone was psyched about having a good time, and I was ready for Kreator!

The bill last night was as follows:

• Warbringer
• Belphegor
• Exodus
• Kreator

If your into metal, and by that, if you still LISTEN AND FOLLOW metal, by no doubt you understand that is an amazing line-up, the likes of which you pray for. Warbringer, delivering old-school thrash with a modern twist, along with black metal legends Belphegor... playing aside two of the greatest thrash metal bands of all time Exodus AND Kreator?

Warbringer started off the show with a thunderous roar, brining as much energy and determination, as well as incredible songs and riffs, as if they were headlining! I've only heard about this band from all my metalhead friends, and it was an honor, and a treat, to watch them live. Belphegore... I will admit, never heard their stuff, either. It was great to do so, though! They have a very smart, very indepth musical ability and style, something that I think buying an album would really give me depth on.

Exodus. Holy shit, what can I say about these guys?! The original band that screamed "DEATH TO POSERS!" and meant it with every ounce of their body, they have always been a mixture of pure "fuck you!" and having a good time. Many bands claim it, these guys have actually done it! They have songs that can pratically bleed with statements that will make people on both sides of the political isle uneasy ("O say can you fucking see/ The missles fall like rain" - "Scar Spangled Banner") and ("Your saviors a killer, you die for Allah /You are all children of a worthless god"). There is always a party attituide, a-la "Toxic Waltz" which, seriously, if you can't find yourself moshing to that song at LEAST a little bit live with 1000 other screaming metalheads... you suck and don't go to metal shows, and the band is amazing!

Rob Dukes (who I refer to as "Rob "Daisy" Dukes, only because it's the easiest way to remember the last name. I guess Rob "Put Up Your" Dukes works fine, too) was the absolute showman; riling up the crowd and supporting his beloved New York Rangers, while guitarist Jack Gibson from California loves The Philadelphia Flyers! Hell, he even put on a Flyers Jersey for "Toxic Waltz"! For me, a little treat was the fact that Jack Gibson was playing the same exact guitar as me, a ESP DV8! I got lucky and got a guitar pick he actually used, and it's the same as me! SWEET!

Kreator. KREATOR! It was nothing short of great! Led Zepplins "In the Light" was used to basically warm up the crowd before they went on, and they opened with the skull-shattering title track off their new album, "Hordes of Chaos"! The rest of the set was peppered with choice tracks such as "Coma of Souls", "People of the Lie", and "Phobia". Miland 'Mille' Petrozza worked the crowd fairly well, and it was hilarious hearing him mention a question that was asked of him if he was serious when he told the crowd to "kill each other?" His reply? "Well, I told them that it was all just a metaphor, that really we're all about peace and harmony." The crowd went dead silent and I kinda smiled as I got what he was saying. "I have to tell you something.... I LIED! For this next song I want you TO KILL EACH OTHER!!!!!!!!!"

After slamming to "Enemy of God" and "Destroy what Detroys You", the rest of the night was great. Excellent shredding, showmanship...

In the end, I got to remember why I love going to metal shows and just why, exactly, The Trocadero is such a great place for a metal show; Because, unlike some places, the people who go to these shows are actually fans of the music and the bands there! They aren't there to be "seen", they aren't there because they think it's "ironic"; no, there is a sort of brotherhood and a good natured feeling that has been with this place since every show I've gone to there since 2003 when I was 18.

Last night was the type of show that comes once in a great while. It wasn't entirely about the incredible bands, the excellent performances.. the fans and friends are the cherry on the sundae at a metal show, and frankly, I want more.

I'll be posting more shows soon, and trust me when I say this: It's going to get GOOD!

Another day, another poster you need to check out. I did this before the inaguration for a series I wanted to do where I basically reminded people that, yes, you can and need to discus the policies of this man that so many are ready to call a god or Superman. We're starting to see people realize and admit that, yes, they did think that to some degree and that he isn't perfect. Thank god for rational thinking!

Keith Olbermann seems to have kept this concept in mind last night as he continued reporting on how the current administration wants to make sure you can never sue for the illegal warrantless wiretapping that was done by the Bush administration, and continues in the "administration of change".

New Anthrax Singer To Have Signing Session... Why?

Anthrax. I fucking love Anthrax!

I got into them in 2002 and the short version of why they're my favorite is that they cured me of any love and respect I had for hair metal. Why? Because Joey Belladonna was every bit as talented as the guys singing in Whitesnake and Cinderella (and the Bullet Boys, still one of my favorite bands), but with intelligent lyrics about sanity, Nazi's, and being alive in a world that seems out to get you. I speak of "Spreading the Disease", my first Anthrax album and one of the best I've ever heard. I've seen them twice and own all their albums, even Volume 8.

So, my credentials in check, this is the dumbest thing I've heard in a while.

I feel sorry for Dan Nelson. He's the new singer for Anthrax and, from what I've heard, he's nothing short of amazing. I look forward to the new album and hearing him on a proper studio track and album with the band (all I've heard so far are bootlegs), but a signing session? Sign what?

His only credentials thus far were singing in a band about 10 people heard of, and there isn't much to go on. He doesn't have much of a history, no one knows where this could go... I think it's a kinda foolish and short-sighted. If it was him with, say, Scott Ian or another member of Anthrax, I would go in a heartbeat! As it stands... sorry, Dan, good luck! Try again after the album comes out.

Three more blogs have picked up the robot story, and they are all overseas. Pretty cool. I'm making waves in places I'll never be and people are writing stories abut me in languages I can't understand and am too lazy to use a translator to read. I am going to simply assume they are saying the robot is great... or they're plotting against me.

A Few Of My Favorite Things (Right Now)

Everyday I visit a bunch of blogs and websites that inspire me and I don't feel that I post my findings enough. Ever since I got posted on NotCot, I felt it's only fitting I share stuff I like to get the word out. Well, enjoy!



Someone was clever enough to take a pineapple grenade and turn it into an awesome piggy bank! SWEET!.... just don't take it with the bank with you. The Love Grenade Coin Bank is available at Heilothrope.




Back in 2001, I thought about becoming a police sketch artist but decided not to because... well, I suck at caricatures. This guy, on the other hand, was able to push his creativity to the limit outside of his job and came up with "Musical Anatomy"! Check out the rest of Shawn Feeny's stuff at his website.


The company "Iron Fist" made this kick-ass high heels! What? I'm secure enough with myself to say that, yes, I like high heel shoes. I know a bunch of women who would love these. Sadly, I can't find them on their site, so here is the Boing Boing story with them.

Lot of Stuff In the Works!

I still have people asking about the roboto and the entire "The End Is Near!" thing. Again, when I want to, I will have a statement and an announcement. It may be sooner than you think.

I'm home sick today. Not feeling too good, and my stomach is making sure I remember that, along with my head. 

Despite that, as always, I'm still working on a million and one things. I'm working on about 3-4 illustrations, I have a logo I'm trying to get done, a book or 3 to plan and layout and finish, and a lot of other things to plot and plan and prepare.
